Paradigms - a perception with a judgement attached to it

How do we see the world through their eyes

7 Areas of Paradigm Rift

1. Concept of Truth
- The word should in relation to Gen Y adds a certain judgement to things that are often neutral. Their response of 'why' is not an empty response
- Experience is king and narrative is a key to working with this group, especially young teachers.
- Don't just tell me it's right, show me that it works.

2. Assumptions of Respect
- Baby boomers were taught to respect their elders, respect is bestowed by position or role.
- Respect is a core value for Gen Y and is the currency of relationship
- Respect will be shown if it's reciprocal and if it relational

3. Communication
- For Baby Boomers communication is all based around 'form' punctuation, etc
- Gen Y communication is about function, not form
- Mobile phones are part of their being, it's about being connected
- Impact on Physiology, physical handwriting for long periods of times a struggle for some
- Impact on Sleep, often adverse to 'switching off'
- Impact on Empathy, can be caused by a lack of face to face contact
- Impact of Vocabulary, interpersonal skills and communicating emotions

4. The value of Patience
- Baby Boomers were told 'patience is a virtue' and 'good things come to those who wait'. Life is meant to be hard.
- Gen Y raised in a mantra that life is meant to be easy.
- Patience is pointless and unacceptable
- If it's too hard or too long, the goal must be worthless
- If life is supposed to be easy and it's not for me, than there is something wrong with me.

5. The Need for Affirmation
- Baby boomers see affirmation as a bonus and negative feedback is seen as a chance to grow, but not a personal issue
- Crave external feedback and praise all the time
- Social media can feed the feedback and affirmation needs of Gen Y
- Negative feedback becomes a personal issue and not separated from performance
- Encouragement and confidence can be fostered and given, self esteem cannot.

6. The Future
- Not a long linear path, but options through pathways for lots of different opportunities.
- 5 year plans not a strategy.
- Prefer to leave options open to the last minute, particularly socially and are approaching career in a similar pattern.
- Need to use the word 'PREPARE' as a powerful way to get them thinking about planning for the future, what do they need to prepare themselves.

7. Learning
- Baby Boomers, blackboards were black, chalk and talk was the tool and they sat in desks and wrote. Homework was memorising to repeat the
following day.
- Gen Y are learning differently now.
- Can and do learn with noise, not the need for silence.
- Gen Y can techno task, they stay on task and are focussed more. There are less auditory learning students who are distracted by noise than in the
past. More kinaesthetic and visual learning.
- There is a difference between noise and interruptions on the cognitive process. Depth of learning can be interrupted by interruptions.
- Need to model exam room conditions so silence is not a new experiences. Gen Y need to be connected but also experience the sounds of silence
